Deadlier Strain of Mpox Raises Concerns Worldwide
Health Alert Issued for Physicians
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an alert to healthcare providers to be vigilant for signs of a more severe strain of mpox. Cases of the more fatal strain have been confirmed in four countries in Africa, prompting concern among health officials.
CDC Issues Health Alerts
The CDC issued a Health Alert Network (HAN) update to inform clinicians and health departments about the more severe mpox strain. The agency noted that the milder strain, clade 2, has a case fatality rate of about 3%, while the more severe strain, clade 1, has a case fatality rate of approximately 10%.
The CDC also issued a separate health alert on Tuesday to notify clinicians and health departments about the situation in Africa. The alert highlights the need for increased surveillance and preparedness measures in countries where the clade 1 strain is prevalent.
