Donald Trump Indicted on Election Interference Charges

Former President Pleads Not Guilty

Charges Stem from Efforts to Overturn 2020 Election

Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to 37 criminal charges during a historic arraignment in a Miami federal courthouse after being indicted on Tuesday in connection with his widespread efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The indictment alleges that Trump and his allies engaged in a multi-state conspiracy to influence the outcome of the election, which he ultimately lost to Joe Biden by more than 7 million votes.

The charges include conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and conspiracy to incite an insurrection.

If convicted, Trump could face up to 20 years in prison on each of the wire fraud charges, up to five years on the conspiracy to defraud charge, and up to 10 years on the conspiracy to incite an insurrection charge.

The indictment is the culmination of a year-long investigation by the Department of Justice into Trump's efforts to overturn the election. It is the first time that a former president has been indicted on criminal charges since Aaron Burr in 1807.
